Plantar Fasciitis in South OKC

Heel painAs one of the most common causes of heel pain, plantar fasciitis involves inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of your foot and connects your heel bone to your toes.

The pain that people with plantar fasciitis experience is typically the worst with the first few steps after getting up in the morning. This pain can also be triggered by extended periods of standing or when getting up after sitting.

The pain is typically worse after exercise, not during it.

What Are the Risk Factors?

Although plantar fasciitis can develop without an apparent cause, some factors can increase your risk of developing this condition:

  • Age. Most people with plantar fasciitis are between 40 and 60. Although we see more and more younger patients with it, especially those who participate in sports and high intensity exercise.
  • Foot mechanics. Those with flat feet, a high arch, or an abnormal walking pattern can experience plantar fasciitis, because those issues can affect the way weight is distributed while standing. Added stress can be placed on the plantar fascia. We will scan patients’ feet with the Foot Levelers scanner to assess their foot mechanics and weight distribution.
  • Obesity. People who are significantly overweight often suffer from the condition, because excess weight puts extra stress on the plantar fascia. Poor diet, especially those high in sugar, can play a role in plantar fasciitis pain.
  • Certain occupations. Factory workers, nurses, teachers, and others who spend most of their working hours walking or standing on hard surfaces can experience damage to the plantar fascia.

We also see patients who tend to wear flip flops and go barefoot, especially on hard flooring surfaces, develop a case of plantar fasciitis.

Our Triple Play Treatment

At AlignOK Chiropractic Wellness, our approach to treating plantar fasciitis is a little different. After assessing your feet and biomechanics, we will recommend a treatment program that typically consists of stretching to begin with, along with adjusting the feet. We usually recommend Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT), along with Extracorporeal magneto-transduction therapy (EMTT) with the MAGNETOLITH, and cold laser therapy.

The purpose of this approach is to “vibrate” the tissue enough to gain more mobility and stretch, followed by “calming” the area down with the MAGNETOLITH. We will often use cold laser therapy following the treatment to further reduce inflammation and pain. We call this approach our triple play treatment.

We also use Foot Levelers custom orthotics to help patients distribute their weight properly on their feet. The orthotics also provide proper alignment and foot stability. Dr. Brotherton can determine if you can benefit from these custom shoe inserts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can orthotics help me?

Absolutely! We suggest at least scanning your feet on the Foot Levelers scanner to see how your weight is distributed and how orthotics can help.

Can plantar fasciitis go away on its own?

Yes and no. If you don’t change your habits that caused the problem in the first place, it won’t. If you change those habits, it is possible to self-resolve over a period of time.

How long until your patients typically notice relief, and what is the process like?

Most patients notice some improvement after just one treatment, and will continue to gradually improve, while other patients won’t see improvement until the end of their care plan. Treatment typically takes 4-6 weeks, and we see the patient twice per week. Each session usually takes 15-20 minutes.

Can misalignments in the spine contribute to this condition? And if so, how?

Yes, if the pelvis and spine are unbalanced and you distribute more weight on one side of your body, your feet ultimately pay the price. This causes a change in the way you walk and stand. It puts pressure unevenly across the feet.
